Power of Group
Tev zukor, Ph.D
In a world where the very foundation of truth is no longer objectively verifiable and mutually agreed upon, but instead a malleable construct dictated by those in positions of authority; the necessity for groups becomes even more vital. When the powerful wield the ability to shape narratives, control information, and define what is considered “legitimate;” both individual freedom and the genuine understanding of self and others becomes severely jeopardized. In such an environment, groups become an indispensable bulwark against manipulation. As group clinicians, this may be the most powerful tool we have in this moment.
One of the most critical roles groups fulfill in this precarious reality is the creation and preservation of alternative narratives. When powerful entities—governments, corporations, or dominant the ideological forces of the time—control the primary channels of communication and public discourse; those entities have the means to effectively silence dissenting voices and impose a singular, often self-serving, version of reality. History can be rewritten to suit present agendas, scientific consensus can be dismissed or distorted, and social issues can be framed in ways that exclusively benefit the ruling elite. In this context, groups provide vital forums where individuals can share their personal experiences, collaboratively discuss and verify alternative information, and collectively construct answers that offer a more nuanced, complex, or even accurate understanding of the world. These narratives are not merely acts of dissent; they are fundamental for intellectual freedom, enabling individuals to question the world around them, critically evaluate information, and undercover a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of complex issues. Without the formation of groups, individuals would be isolated in their skepticism, easily dismissed as outliers, and ultimately rendered powerless to challenge the imposed “truth.” The volume and consistency of official narratives can be overwhelming for individuals, so groups can provide the rich, fertile soil needed to resist such persuasive force.
As any group therapist knows, groups are absolutely essential for providing validation and a sense of belonging. In a world where truth is dictated from above, individuals who disagree with this official narrative can experience profound cognitive dissonance, psychological distress, and a sense of isolation. People begin to doubt their own perceptions, question their sanity, or feel powerless to articulate their concerns for fear of ostracization or worse. Groups offer a sanctuary where these individuals can connect with others who share similar doubts, observations, and experiences. This shared understanding can provide critical validation. Through open dialogue, rigorous debate, and the pooling of diverse knowledge and perspectives; groups can collaboratively identify patterns, expose inconsistencies, and arrive at a more coherent understanding of a situation. Groups can transform individual uncertainty into collective clarity.
Beyond providing support and grounding, groups are also indispensable for amplifying voices and organizing effective resistance. An individual possesses limited power when confronting the vast and often oppressive machinery of the state or government. However, when individuals gather into groups, their collective voice gains undeniable strength, and their combined actions acquire significant power. A protest organized by a group can draw widespread attention to injustices that would otherwise be suppressed or ignored by official channels. This capacity for collective action is particularly potent because it directly disrupts the carefully constructed illusion of consensus and obedience that is required to subjugate the masses. Further, when otherwise marginalized individuals start to see group resistance, the group grows in both strength and number, which amplifies the message of the group.
Groups also play a vital role in safeguarding diversity of thought and experience. Oppressors often seek to homogenize perspectives and suppress any ideas that deviate from their preferred narrative. Nuance is not tolerated. Groups, by their very nature, are designed to bring together individuals with varied backgrounds, distinct perspectives, and diverse areas of expertise. This inherent diversity fosters critical thinking, encourages debate, and allows for true exploration of critical issues. In a world where truth is dictated and carefully curated, the very existence of diversity becomes a powerful and essential act of resistance. It ensures that the powerful cannot fully monopolize intellectual discourse. As has always been the case throughout human history, diversity is a strength, which explains why it is usually one of the first targets of those who seek to corruptly oppress the masses. Pluralism of thought is a cornerstone of a healthy society.
In a world where truth is a contested commodity that is controlled and distributed by those who hold power; the importance of group transcends mere preference and becomes an indispensable condition for human resistance. Groups help protect our liberties and preserve intellectual integrity. Without group, individuals would be left isolated, disoriented, and vulnerable to the fabricated whims of the powerful. The power of the many – united in the pursuit of genuine understanding and justice – remains the most potent force against tyranny
To put succinctly – and to frame in a uniquely American perspective – the United States was founded on the principle of elected officials representing the condensed will of the masses. At our founding, we chose to never bend to the autocratic rule of Kings. Through the power of group, we will hold this line.
